Lifelong Educator

Lucy began her career in education in 1989 as an instructional assistant at Point Loma High School and then Roosevelt Junior High School. While working in SDUSD, Lucy belonged to the Classified School Employee Association.

In January, 1994, upon graduating from SDSU with a B.S. in Health Science and minor in English, Lucy began her student teaching at Bonita Vista High School. The following semester she student taught at Bonita Vista Middle School.

After earning her BCLAD Teaching Credential, Lucy worked on a grant that took her to all of the middle schools in Sweetwater Union High School District as a health teacher.

In 1996, Lucy was hired by SUHSD to teach at Bonita Vista Middle School. In her 27 years at BVM, she has taught over 5,000 middle school students in the subject areas of English, health, world cultures, U.S. History, Yearbook/Journalism, English Language Development, and co-taught in the Special Education classroom. In addition, Lucy has been the Interventions Specialist Resource Teacher offering support services such as direct instruction and tutoring to struggling students. She earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Best Practices specialization in 2010.

During her tenure as a teacher, Lucy has been an active union member serving as Organizing Chair, a site representative, Grievance Committee and PAC member. Serving not only the students in the community, but her colleagues as well.

In July of 2023, she began her tenure as President of the Sweetwater Education Association. In September she successfully worked out the return of permanent/probationary status of all teachers who had been laid off in March of 2020. Lucy triumphantly oversaw the negotiation of a 9% pay raise, $2,000 increase to healthcare benefits, $4000 stipends for Education Specialists, Speech Language Pathologists on their own salary schedule, and the bringing CTE Teachers to the 7-12 salary schedule.
